Abstract

Reverberation Mapping of Active Nuclei
B.M. Peterson 1998, Advances in Space Research, 21, 57.

Reverberation mapping of active nuclei allows us to probe the geometry and kinematics of the broad-line region (BLR) by examination of the detailed response of broad emission lines to continuum variations. The fundamental concepts and assumptions are explained, with particular attention to the possibility of anisotropic continuum emission. The current state of the field is summarized, and prospects for the future are outlined.
