Assignment (2): Development of a Story Idea Based on an Existing Idea

Analyze an existing story or script.
Create the elements necessary to bring this story to life.
The story may be an adaptation of an existing screenplay,
story, song, or other existing material that has not already been made into a film.
The purpose of this assignment is to introduce students to the process of adaptation while
allowing them to focus on the visual development portion of the concept development process.

Assignment (2) Requirements:
- Brief character descriptions and basic designs
- Setting / environment / prop descriptions and basic designs
- Brief Plot Outline / Synopsis
Prepare a brief plot outline of the piece and a concise description of major plot events, including:
1. Conflict and/or drive motivation
2. Story structure - if classical design - including inciting incident, progressive complications, crisis, climax, resolution, value changes in protagonist. If non-classical structure, describe motivation for structure, narrative and stylistic elements which unify the story.

For the purposes of this assignment, compile the visuals to
support your analysis the piece and it's elements.
1. Inspirational reference materials
2. Conceptual studies of primary characters, settings, and props
3. Beat boards - visual representation of significant story beats
Students will prepare a 5 minute presentation of their story analysis and materials.
Visual materials must be formatted for effective display within a screen resolution of
1024X768 and presented in a slideshow formatted.
Suggested delivery methods include:
- Adobe Acrobat
- Linked web pages
- Microsoft Powerpoint
Students are responsible for ensuring that presentations function properly by the due date.
