Elliptio jayana (Lea, 1838)

1. Chipola River, Gulf Co., FL - 70 mm
2. Rocky Creek, Gulf Co., FL - 74 mm
3. Conecuh River, Escambia Co., AL - 57 mm
4. Jordon Creek, Escambia Co., AL - 58 mm

Type locality: Florida.

Range: Savannah, St Marys, Oklawaha, Chipola, Suwannee, Choctawhatchee, and Escambia River systems.

Remarks: I am referring this taxon to Lea's Unio jayensis, which appears to be an eroded, unrayed specimen from an uncertain locality - "Florida." It may be that another name needs to be applied. Lea clearly named the species after Jay, and the specific epithet should be corrected to jayi or jayana

Like icterina, jayana has a wide distribution across the south Atlantic Slope to the Gulf drainages, skipping peninsular Florida.

It is very similar to the Apalachicolan aquila, but is less glossy, less rayed, and has a straight or convex rather than concave dorsal ridge.
