LVDS Product Family IntroductionsLVDS Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) is a new technology addressing the needs of today's high performance data transmission applications. It is also designed to meet the needs of future applications since the power supply may be as low as 2V. This technology is based on the ANSI/TIA/EIA-644 LVDS Interface Standard. LVDS technology features a low voltage differential signal of 330mV (250mV MIN abd 450mV MAX) and fast transition times. This allows the products to address high data rates ranging from 100's Mbps to greater than 1 Gbps. Additionally, the low voltage swing minimizes power dissipation while providing the benefits of differential transmission. The LVDS technology is used in simple line driver and receiver physical layer devices as well as more complex interface communication chipsets. The Channel Link chipsets multiplex and demultiplex slow TTL signal lines to provide a narrow, high speed, low power LVDS Interface. These chipsets provide dramatic systems savings in cable and connector costs, as well as a reduction in the amount of physical space required for the connector footprint. LVDS solutions provide designers with a new alternative to solving high speed I/O interface problems. LVDS delivers Megabits @ milliwatts for today's and tomorrow's bandwidth hungry data transmission applications. Bus LVDS (BLVDS) is a new family of bus interface circuits based on LVDS technology specifically addressing multipoint cable or backplane applications. It differs from standard LVDS in providing increased drive current to handle double terminations that are required in multipoint applications. BLVDS features a low volatge differential signal of approx. 250mV and fast transition times. This allows the products to address high data rates ranging from 100'sMbps to over 1Gbps. Additionally, the low voltage swing minimizes power dissipation and noise generation. The differential data transmission scheme provides a +/-1V common mode range and live insertion (hot plug) of devices into an active bus. The BLVDS products are offered in two categories providing optimized interface devices for all bus configurations. The two families are:
Bus LVDS addresses many of the challenges faced in a high-speed bus design. BLVDS eliminates the need for a special termination pull-up rail. It eliminates the need for active termination devices, utilizes common power supply rails (3.3V or 5V), employs a simple termination scheme, minimizes power dissipation in the interface devices, generates little noise, supports live insertion of cards and drives heavily loaded multi-point busses at 100's Mbps! The Bus LVDS products provide designers with new alternatives for solving high-speed multi-point bus interface probelms. The Flat Panel Display Interface product family is composed of two classes of chipsets. The first is FPD-Link which provides a narrow high speed interface between the graphic controller on the motherboard and TFT-LCD panels in Notebook applications. The second class is LDI (LVDS Display Interface) which is enhanced from FPD-Link by supporting long cable drive for flat panel desktop monitor applications.
