First physics results from SNO

Abstract

The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) is a solar neutrino detector using 1000 tonnes of heavy water and located 2 km underground in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. This talk presents the first physics results from SNO where the flux of electron neutrinos is measured using the charged current reaction on deuterium. When combined with the elastic scattering data from Super Kamiokande this result demonstrates at the 3.1 sigma level that muon or tau neutrinos are appearing in the initailly pure electron neutrino beam. This is clear evidence for oscillations of neutrinos from the Sun.
