CM 07: The Hall Effect
Investigate the Hall effect in various semiconductors. You will first
calibrate a magnet using a gaussmeter and commercial Hall probe. You
will then measure the Hall voltage of your samples as a function of current
and of magnetic field. From your data, you can calculate the sign and
concentration of the majority charge carriers in the material.
Optional: investigate the properties of some modern commercial Hall
sensors and switches. Use them to design your own projects, such as an
intruder alert or conveyer belt counter, or to build your own gaussmeter.
