Introduction and General Format

This year, the Spring quarter of physics 880.06 will be devoted to a single broad topic: superconductivity. The previous quarters of the sequence are NOT prerequisites; the course should be accessible even if you haven't taken the first two quarters.

There is no required text. Recommended texts include Michael Tinkham, ``Introduction to Superconductivity,'' Second Edition (McGraw-Hill, New York, 1996) or J. R. Waldram, ``Superconductivity of Metals and Cuprates,'' (IOP Publishing, 1996). See also the superconductivity chapter of Ashcroft and Mermin. All three are on reserve in the Science and Engineering Library.

The course will meet Tu and Th from 10:30 to 11:55 in McPherson 1045 (just east of Smith Lab). The instructor is David Stroud.

Grading will be based on five problem sets and a small term project. Problem sets will generally be due by noon on Fridays, and should be turned into the mailbox of the grader, Mr. Wissam Al-Saidi. I will assign more than five problem sets (probably seven), but you will be graded only on the best five of those seven. Unless otherwise indicated, each problem is worth 10 points.
