I often get lots of questions about how to enter numbers in
scientific notation in the calculators. This kind of depends
on the calculator you are using. Generally, especially for most
TI-30 calculators, using the EE (EXP) key you would do the following:
Enter 2 x 102 : 2 EE 2 (the EE key stands for "x 10")
2 x 10-2 : 2 EE +/- 2 (the +/- is that key on the calc.)
103 : 1 EE 3 (103 is actually 1 x 103)
For the latter case, you need to enter the 1 before the EE key on many
of the calculators. Not all of the allowed calculators require you to
enter the 1 first but you won't go wrong by doing it. Also, on many
newer calculators the EE key is a "2nd" function key (i.e. you have
to hit the "2nd" key first.)
As stated above, the EE or EXP key stands for "x 10". I recently
saw a calculator with a “ x 10n ” key in place of the EE or EXP key.
Some calculators will actually show the "x 10" in the display.
Others don’t but the power of 10 is kind of raised up a little from
the line and smaller.
If you still have problems come see me or a TA.
