Read the Preparing for Midterm Exams: Using Practice Exams in the "Practice Exams - Preaparing for Midterms"
module. This explains how to effectively use practice exams.
Practice Exams for Exam 1 - on Carmen
Comments:
The exam will cover Chapters 1-3
You should be able to do any homework problem in these chapters.
There are several helpful links for this exam material at the
"Helpful Tidbits" link on the class webpage.
The ones of interest go from "Names and Symbols of the First 30 Elements" to
"Stoichiometry, BCA Tables and Limiting Reactants". The round-even rule will
not be encountered on the exam.
There are three practice exams in the Practice Exams module on Carmen. They all require the
use of the LockDown Browser. There's a short practice quiz which requires the LD browser. Try
that first to get everything set up correctly. I highly suggest using your iPad to take these
so you know how the exam works and what it will look like on the iPad.
The actual exam may have a different number of questions. Read the
"Preparing for Midterm Exams: Using Practice Exams" before using the practice exams. There also
PDF version and PDF versions of the solutions.
If you really want to get the most out of the practice
exams take at least some of them as if they were the real
thing. If you don't it really won't give you a good idea
about how well you know the material. Remember, on the real
exam you have to fill blanks for numeric answers and choose
answers for other types of questions and that can take 3-5
minutes, which means you actually only have about 65 minutes
to actually work on the problems. Try to take the practice
exams in time allotted. See instructions when at the practice
exam link in Carmen.
The following are reminders for the exam.
You MUST use an allowed calculator with cover removed and put away.
NO HATS, HEAD BANDS, OR OTHER HEAD COVERINGS! (except for religious
reasons - see Dr. Zellmer before the exam). They must be removed.
NO laptops, cell phones, pdas, pagers, mp3 players,
watches. Electronics other than your calculator and iPad
must be turned off and put away
NO pencil cases.
No personal scratch paper, only that given to you at the exam.
NO food or drinks, unless medically required (see Dr. Zellmer beforehand).
You MUST bring an OSU STUDENT PICTUREID to the Midterm.
Your ID will be collected when the scratch paper is passed out. It will returned
when you return the scratch paper to the TA.

Practice Exams for Exam 3 - on Carmen
Comments:
The exam will cover Chapters 7-9
You should be able to do any homework problem in these chapters.
You will be given the MO diagrams for Boron-Neon w/o the labels for the
various molecular orbitals. Remember, pi MO have two orbitals which are
degenerate. That's how you can tell which are the sigma and pi MOs. Also,
remember the bonding MOs are lower in energy than the atomic orbitals which
are drawn on either side of the MOs (the AOs the MOs are made from). Also,
the # of MOs equals the number of AOs they're made from (combining 2 AOs
makes 2 MOs, one bonding and one antibonding and the bonding are lower in
energy than the antibonding). The information page
you'll get with the exam is given with the practice exams.

Practice Exams for the Final Exam - on Carmen
Comments:
The final is cumulative. It covers the whole semester, chapters 1-12,
For Ch 12 (solids) it would cover Sections 12.1-12.5 but not everyhting in
those sections. Using what's in the Lecture module for Ch 12 (solids)
and my notes will suffice.
It's about 20-25% new material and 75-80% old material. There's a total
of 50-55 questions.
Study your practice exams and quizzes for the old material. Also, look
at the practice finals (see below).
For more information about the final see the Exams link.
Practice Finals
Click the link below to see a sample of what information you might get
on the final, as provided by the office. This will give you some idea
about what constants and equations you might see.
Sample of Supplemental Info Sheet for Final
There's 3 practice finals on Carmen. Go to the "Practice Exams" module and
then the "CHEM 1210 - Preparation for the Final Exam" submodule.
There's one practice final in Carmen with 53 questions.
There's no time limit set in Carmen so give yourself 105 minutes, just like
the final. I've also set it up so you have multiple attempts, although I'm
not sure how useful that is.
There's a 2nd version with 60 questions in a PDF format. Give yourself 2 hours.
There's a link to solutions below the link for the exam.
There's a 3rd version with 75 questions in a PDF format. Give yourself 150 minutes (2.5 hours).
There's a link to solutions below the link for the exam.
There's some sample problems at the bottom. These are Sample Exercises and other
things from the textbook. I assume you did most of these as you were studying that
material. I think you're better off taking some of the practice midterms and quizzes
again for the old material.
