Elliptio conferta (Lea, 1834)
1. New River, Onslow Co., NC - 80 mm
2. Orton Pond, Brunswick Co., NC - 76 mm
3. Cape Fear River, Duplin Co., NC - 80 mm
4-6. Rock Fish Creek, Duplin/Pender Co., NC - 4: 78 mm; 5: 57 mm; 6: 44 mm
Type locality: Santee Canal, South Carolina.
Range: Cape Fear to Canoochee River systems.
Remarks: This species has been confused with raveneli and insulsa (= cistellaeformis). It is more southern than insulsa, but the two overlap in the region between Cape Fear and Lake Waccamaw. It is very similar to insulsa and future work may suggest that the two are subspecies of a single wide-ranging species. It differs from insulsa in being glossier and distinctly rayed as a juvenile, but adults are quite similar. It is locally abundant.
See remarks under raveneli.
