Type locality: Hopeton, near Darien, Georgia.

Range: Endemic to the Altamaha River system.

Remarks: This species and roanokensis are the largest Elliptios. Hopetonensis is identified by its posterior wing and the inflated dorsal ridge. Dariensis is sympatric with hopetonensis and may resemble it, but dariensis lacks the wing and has the posterior ridge sharp and angled rather than swollen.
