Elliptio insulsa (Lea, 1857)
1. Tar River, Pitt Co., NC - 67 mm
2. Rocky River, Chatham Co., NC - 83 mm
3. Meherrin River, Northampton Co., NC - 53 mm
4. Waccamaw River, Columbus Co., NC - 27 mm
Type locality: Roanoke River, Wheldon, North Carolina.
Range: York to Waccamaw River systems.
Remarks: This species is easily recognizable by its coarse periostacum, white nacre (usually), and greatly inflated, box-like shape. Conferta to the south is obviously related to insulsa, but the periostracum is polished. This apparently is the cistellaeformis of the Common Names book. Insulsa may be locally abundant.
