Elliptio nasutilus (Lea, 1863)

1, 4. Greenfield Pond, New Hanover Co., NC. 1. - 83 mm; 2. - 67 mm.
2, 3. Lake Waccamaw, Columbus Co., OH. 2. - 68 mm; 3. - 60 mm.

Type locality: Livingston's Creek, Brunswick Co., North Carolina.

Range: Waccamaw and Little Pee Dee River systems, and adjacent counties on the Cape Fear peninsula.

Remarks: This is a very distinct but localized species -- not surprising given the number of endemic mussels from this area already recognized. The peculiar coloration, anterior umbos, white nacre, and bowed aspect are unique.

Lea's type specimen is a juvenile. Lea changed the name to Unio nasutulus (unnecessarily) in 1866.
