Elliptio producta (Conrad, 1836)

1. Monocacy River, Frederick Co., MD. 92 mm.
2. Potomac River, Fairfax Co., VA. 65 mm.
3. Tonoloway River, Fulton Co., PA. 59 mm.
4. Tar River, Edgecombe Co., NC. 47 mm.

Type locality: Savannah River, Augusta (probably in error).

Range: Potomac (into Pennsylvania and West Virginia) to the James River; ? Edisto River.

Remarks: Two similar species share similar ranges and are easily confused: producta and fisheriana. See remarks under fisheriana. Producta tends to look like a Ligumia.

Like fisheriana, producta juveniles tend to be greenish, becoming black with age. The nacre may be purple or white.

The type locality of Savannah River is outside of the known range of this species. Specimens identical to the holotype of producta occur in Maryland and elsewhere. No specimens are known to me south of possibly the Edisto River. I suspect that the type locality is in error.
