Elliptio raveneli (Conrad, 1834)
1, 4. Santee River, SC - 1: 56 mm; 4: 39 mm
2, 3. Whiteoak Creek, Jones/Onslow Co., NC - 55 mm; 3: 54 mm
Type locality: Wateree Canal; since found in the small creeks near Cooper River; South Carolina.
Range: Not known with certainty; at least Cooper-Santee, Whiteoak, and Ogeechee River systems.
Remarks: Most specimens of conferta and insulsa have been misidentified as raveneli. True raveneli is quite rare. OSUM has only five lots. The "raveneli" of Lake Waccamaw are either conferta or insulsa, both of which occur there.
Raveneli is easily separated from conferta and insulsa by its much thinner shell, winged posterior edge, and the beak sculpture, which is made up of more numerous, squiggly ridges than in the other two taxa. Adults may be rayed or not. Raveneli is usually more compressed than conferta and insulsa.
