Recent changes to this page:
- Dec 05-2006 --- Your TA will have the equation sheets at the Final. You are
only responsible for concepts. You
will be given any equation you need. For example, conservation of energy is a
concept. The expressions for rotational kinetic energy or gravitational
potential energy are equations.
- Dec 05-2006 --- Final Review Sheets 1 ,
2 . GOOD LUCK!
- Nov 27-2006 --- FINAL EXAM INFORMATION: the final exam will consist of 2
"show work" problems from the material covered on the midterm, and up to a few
show work problems and some multiple choice problems on the material covered in
Chps. 9-13. The "show work" problems will be similar to typical Quiz problems
and the multiple choice will be similar to those on the midterm. The final exam
is THURSDAY, DEC 7, 1:30-3:18 IN YOUR RECITATION ROOM. Review sheets will be
posted early next week.
- Nov 16-2006 --- NO CLASS (2:30 lecture) next Wednesday Nov 22 - you will
receive a Thanksgiving break assignment for Chp. 13 material that you
(and you alone)
will be responsible for on the next Quiz.
- Nov 2-2006 --- Midterm Solutions 1 ,
2 , 3 , 4 , and 5 .
- Nov 1-2006 --- Webassign problems that were due yesterday (Tue 10/31) at 8am are now due Friday (11/3) at 8am.
- Oct 25-2006 --- Here is a copy of the equation sheet that you will find attached to the Midterm
- Oct 24-2006 --- Midterm Review Sheets 1 ,
2 .
- Oct 23-2006 --- Midterm is Oct. 26 7:30-9:18 - YOUR RECITATION INSTRUCTOR WILL GIVE YOU THE LOCATION OF YOUR CLASSES MIDTERM.
- Oct 23-2006 --- Make-up Midterm will be Oct 27, 8:30/10:30/12:30/4:30 in M2015 Physcis Research Building (map). IF YOU DID NOT SIGN UP FOR THE MAKE-UP YOU CANNOT TAKE THE MAKE-UP.
- Oct 20-2006 --- One additional make-up midterm slot has been added on Friday Oct. 27th: 4:30-6:18pm. YOU MUST SIGN UP IN LECTURE TO BE ABLE TO TAKE A MAKE-UP MIDTERM. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Locations of the Thursday evening and Friday make-up midterm will be announced on Monday.
- Oct 18-2006 --- If you have another midterm which conflicts with the upcoming 131 Midterm (see below) several make-up time slots will be offered on Friday, Oct. 27th: 8:30-10:18am, 10:30-12:18pm, and 12:30-2:18pm. YOU NEED TO SIGN UP IN LECTURE THIS WEEK to take advantage of this option.
- Oct 9-2006 --- It is official: the midterm will be Thursday EVENING Oct. 26, 7:30-9:18 location TBA.
- Oct 1-2006 --- Hint on 2-54. Like the sprinter problem we did in class, break it into two constant acceleration problems. The motion after the rocket turns off is described by an equation that requires, as initial conditions, the height and velocity of the rocket just when its motor turned off. Both of these can be expressed as combinations of the duration and magnitude of the acceleration. Then evaluate the post burn phase at the height and time given. See me if you have questions.
- Oct 1-2006 --- WebAssign issues on Week 2 homework: Dr. Bolland claims that both problems 54 and 81 are fine. On 81 make sure you calculate the percentage difference accurately. On 54, you do not need to include gravity when the rocket is accelerating. Its net acceleration is the quantity given.
- Sept 26-2006 --- Problems with WebAssign related to "Mastering Physics" bundle: SBX may not have given you WebAssign access cards if you purchased the book bundled with "Mastering Physics". They will correct the mistake. Ask for a Mr. Paul Watkins.
- Sept 21-2006 --- Everything you wanted to know about text books:
- - At the book stores is one book with companion volume that is good for the entire 13x sequence. This is your best bet:
"Physics for Scientists and Engineers: A Strategic Approach with Modern Physics" (chs.1-42) includes student workbook (paperback)
Randall D. Knight, California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo
ISBN: 0-8053-8685-8 and also 0-536-10357-7 (reduced price + webassign)
Publisher: Benjamin Cummings
Copyright: 2004
Format: Cloth Package; 1472 pp
- - You might also see a 5 volume set (again bundled with a workbook) around. This is also good for the entire 13x sequence.
- - In both cases 131 is taught out of Volume 1, Chps. 1-15. If you are taking 133, you need a version with Modern Physics. Caveat Emptor.
- Sept 21-2006 --- No labs this week. They start next week and require the labbook advertised in the syllabus handed out in class. Homework assignments are on the syllabus and are to be completed by WebAssign (see bolland@mps.ohio-state.edu) with questions.
- Sept 20-2006 --- First day of class.
Make sure to review course
description and information in "General Information Physics 131-132-133" handout from class. If you have any questions, now is the time
to ask. If you don't have these documents, they can be found in Smith Lab 1010.
