Quiz 12: Chapter 10 (10.4-10.7) and Chapter 11 (11.1-11.5)
Section 10.4:
Gas mixtures and partial pressure.
Sections 10.5-10.6:
Kinetic-Molecular Theory of gases, diffusion and effusion.
Section 10.7:
Real gases, deviations from ideal behavior, van der Walls Eqn.
Make sure you can do the assigned textbook questions, the tutorials and the homework
review questions.
Homework coverage (you should be able to do all problems in the given ranges):
The quiz covers sections 10.4-10.7. You should be able to do EOCEs
10.6-10.12, 10.61-10.94, 10.101-10.118
For the on-line homework:
The Tutorials and the Homework Review problem sets are for credit. They
are due the Friday and Saturday, respectively, the weekend of the quiz.
Think of them as a review of the material after you've done end-of-chapter
problems.

Sections 11.1-11.5:
Attractive Forces (AF) and their realtionship to properties of substances
and phase changes. Be able to look at various molecules and identify the
AF between them. Know how the AF in a molecule effect the properties (vapor
pressure, rate of evaporation, bp, mp, sublimation pt., H_v, H_fus, H_sub,
viscosity, surface tension). Understand heating curves.
Remember: Stronger AF => lower vapor pressure and slower evaporation
generally higher everything else:
(b.p., m.p., s.p. Hv, Hfus, Hsub,
critical temp., viscosity, surface tension)
The Clausius-Clapeyron Eqn is found in "A Closer Look" (Section 11.5).
It was discussed in class and in the notes. You should understand and be
able to use the Clausius-Clapeyron Eqn (which you will be given).
This includes understanding the graph and CC eqn I showed in lecture.
Homework problems dealing with this are in the Additional Exercises
section at the end of the chapter.
